Things To Do Before A Kitchen Remodel

April 25, 2009 - 8:09 pm

You’ve decided to start a kitchen remodel.  If you are not able to do these things yourself, you may want to hire a kitchen designer.  For any kitchen remodel to be successful, you need a thought out plan.  A good kitchen designer should be able to balance your dream with your budget to give you the best kitchen remodel experience possible.

When hiring a designer for your kitchen remodel project it’s important to be honest about your budget.  Tell them exactly how much you’re willing to spend on your kitchen remodel.  This is the best way for the designer to get a clear idea of how to make your dream a reality.  If you are not clear about how much money is available, the designer could go a little overboard in an attempt to make everything perfect.

For a kitchen remodel project you need to consider how much time you’re willing to give up your kitchen for.  Kitchen remodeling takes time; there can be no doubt about that.  An experienced kitchen designer should be able to give you a good idea of how long the project will take.  Take your time in figuring out a plan for how you can live without a kitchen.  Know how much time every day the contractors will be in your home.  It can be very invasive to your privacy if you never have a moment alone in your own home, knowing that beforehand will help you make an educated decision.

A kitchen designer will want as much information on your kitchen remodel as possible.  Do your research before you meet with the designer to determine exactly what it is you want.  Do you want a very modern and sleek new kitchen?  Will your plan include hardwood flooring ? Perhaps something more colorful and bright?  Or do you want to take a blast to the past and go for a retro style?  If you don’t have a particular theme in mind, make a list of likes and dislikes.  Search through magazines and clips out examples of things you like.  This will allow your designer to get a clear vision of what you want when this kitchen remodel is done.  Also have a list of questions you want to ask your designer.

Any good kitchen designer will question you at the first meeting.  They will likely want to know what your expectations of the kitchen remodel are.  You can also expect a lot of questions on how you use your kitchen.  Do you entertain a lot?  Do you have a busy household and focus on speed in the kitchen?  Ask yourself these questions beforehand so that you’re prepared.

Finally, make a plan to minimize the disruption to your life during the kitchen remodel.  Make a temporary kitchen in another room in the house.  Or barbeque a lot if it’s warm outside.  With a little planning your kitchen remodel can run as smoothly as possible and you’ll end up with a room you can be proud of.
